Our Competition

What is the University Rover Challenge?

The University Rover Challenge (URC) is an international robotics competition held annually by the Mars Society. This competition brings together student teams from universities across the world to design, build, and operate Mars rovers capable of completing a variety of tasks in a simulated Martian environment. URC challenges participants to develop innovative solutions for real-world space exploration problems.

Our Journey to URC

Since 2012, our team has been a proud participant in the University Rover Challenge, consistently competing against the best in the world. In 2017, we achieved the ultimate success by winning the world title with our rover Gryphon, a testament to our team’s dedication, innovation, and technical prowess.

Our legacy of excellence continues, with our 2024 placement of 4th out of 102 teams being yet another step in our journey of pushing the boundaries of robotics and space exploration.

Competition Highlights

URC requires teams to build rovers that can perform a variety of complex tasks, including:

  • Autonomous Traversal: Navigating difficult terrains while avoiding obstacles using advanced algorithms and stereoscopic vision systems.
  • Scientific Exploration: Using custom-built scientific instruments to search for signs of life in the soil.
  • Equipment Servicing: Precisely operating tools to repair or service equipment at mock-up bases on Mars.
  • Extreme Retrieval and Delivery: Performing delicate tasks, such as picking up objects, handling samples, and delivering payloads across rugged landscapes.

How We Compete

Our team approaches the URC with a rigorous process that includes:

  1. Design & Development: Our Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Science Subteams work closely to develop a rover that integrates mechanical engineering, electronics, software, and scientific instruments.
  2. Testing & Iteration: We continuously test our rover, refining both the hardware and software to handle the harsh simulated Martian environment.
  3. Competition Day: During the competition, our rover is tested in four challenging mission tasks over multiple days.

Why It Matters

The University Rover Challenge fosters innovation in robotics and space exploration, providing students like us the opportunity to work on real-world problems. By competing, we contribute to the future of space exploration while gaining hands-on experience in robotics, science, and teamwork.

This competition not only allows us to showcase our skills but also helps us prepare for careers in space exploration, robotics, and beyond.
